A 25-year-old banker named Connor Sturgeon opened fire at his workplace in downtown Louisville, Kentucky on Monday morning. He live-streamed the gun attack that left five people dead and eight injured. The gunman has been identified as Connor Sturgeon, an employee of the Old National Bank. Louisville Metro Interim Sheriff Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said he was killed in a gunfight with police. Four of the victims who died Monday morning have been identified as 40-year-old Joshua Barrick; Juliana Farmer, 45 years old; Tommy Elliott, 63 years old; and James Tutt, 64 years old. Late Monday night, the fifth victim, Deana Eckert, 57, also died. Among the nine injured, a police officer who had just graduated from the police academy 10 days earlier was shot in the head. Medics said of the five injured, five were shot. The mass shooting started at the Old National Bank on Main Street just after 8:30 a.m. Police arrived at the bank within three minutes of being dispatched and found the shooter still shooting. Mayor Craig Greenberg thanked the “brave and heroic” first responders for their actions. Police cordoned off much of the city’s downtown streets following the shooting. This shooting is just one of 145 mass shootings this year.

However, Sturgeon also said he is starting to mature socially in college and hopes to become a “better” person.

An old high school friend knew Sturgeon and his family. This person said that Sturgeon was a good man and came from a good family. They also said that they have never seen any red flags or signs that this could happen and that they cannot believe Sturgeon caused this attack.

The cause of the shooting may be because Sturgeon learned that he was about to be laid off at the bank. Police are investigating to find out the motive and cause of the crime.

At a press conference on Monday, Governor Andy Beshear said one of the fatalities in the shooting, Tommy Elliot, was “one of my closest friends.” Elliott was a senior vice president at a bank, according to his LinkedIn profile.

“I witnessed people being murdered,” said witness Buchheit-Sims. She was virtually attending a morning meeting at the bank when the shooting started.

Caleb Goodlett received a call from his wife, who works at the bank, and said she was locked in a vault inside the bank. Goodlett called 911 but officials were already aware of the shooting.

Hagan Curd was walking his dog on East Main Street on Monday morning when he saw people running towards him. He heard gunshots and recorded a video at the scene.

Old National Bank has headquarters in Evansville, Indiana, and Chicago, and has more than 250 bank centers throughout the Midwest. The bank’s management team is heading to Louisville, the company said on Facebook.

Louisville, located along the border of Kentucky and Indiana, has a population of approximately 630,000 according to the 2020 Census. The 300 block of East Main Street borders the east side of the small Louisville Slugger Field and includes dental offices, furniture stores, and the Louisville Ballet.

President Joe Biden condemned the latest mass shooting and called on Republican lawmakers to take action on gun legislation.

“Once again, our nation mourns in the wake of senseless gun violence – Jill and I pray for the victims and all those impacted by today’s shooting. Too many Americans are dying as a result of inaction on gun violence. When will Republican members of Congress act to protect our communities?” Biden said in a tweet.
